Four Convicted In Bogus Medicare Scheme

Saturday, April 8th, 2006

Four people have been convicted of federal fraud charges in Santa Ana for submitting more than $24 million in false bills to Medicare.

Prosecutors say one person used the proceeds to buy a Rolls-Royce, a yacht and other luxury items.

The defendants were among 10 people indicted last March on 35 counts each of health care fraud.

In the scheme, people would be recruited from the local Vietnamese and Korean communities for medical examinations with two doctors, who prescribed nutrition products and motorized wheelchairs that weren’t needed and, in most cases, were never provided.

The four are scheduled to be sentenced July 10. The fraud and money laundering count each carry a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.

Four other defendants have pleaded guilty.
